What You Wear Is a Reflection of How You Feel
September 7, 2023

Have you ever heard it said “what you wear is a reflection of how you feel?” neither have I but I believe it’s true. When you feel like stepping out for the evening to maybe dinner and a movie; rarely does the picture come to mind of a couple in sweatpants and sweatshirts. Not to say you can’t do it that way it just doesn’t measure up to the idea that comes to mind.

Conversely, when you find out that the house is out of an essential and you just need to run out and grab whatever is needed, we don’t spend much time getting ready.

I believe clothes can lift our spirits when the blahs set in. These times may be minimized when we realize that they are setting in, we just put on our favorite outfit (or a new one) and go to a place that we have come to appreciate and allow ourselves to bask in the presence of God’s creation there could be little doubt things will at these moments begin to look up.

Clothes are our choice of expressing on the outside how we feel on the inside.

I keep clothes way too long whether that be my size or the style has changed. Don’t be like I was, I have since come to express my sense of uniqueness through my daily attire that was always there.

My choice of what I wear for the day can even be what I want to happen. I remember being admonished “don’t dress for the job you have, dress for the job you want.” This luckily stayed with me as I watched the world go through a strange transition that was called “dressing down”. This was explained as a method of making the atmosphere more comfortable to work in. First, I wasn’t uncomfortable, and second, the workplace still had to deal out discipline which is never easy.

So, dressing down by those accounts didn’t work. A jogging suit for a nice brisk walk is still applicable, even for a quick trip to the grocery store. This is a huge option in our day that we have complete control over. It’s our answer to the question “how do I want to be seen today?”

I use to surprise my wife when the workday was over by telling her to “make yourself look like a million bucks” which was my way of saying we were going out so get ready. I recall those times very fondly.

I want to encourage you to say with your attire what you want the world to know about you. While we all have colors and styles that we prefer there remains a myriad of colors that with the proper mix and accessories not only make us feel empowered but can even help those around us come to a greater appreciation for the day, time, and place where we live.

In your moving about trying to look for those that are glad about the day and have expressed it in their attire. Seek to build your ability to discern these people who show their vitality for life and being by different colors and styles. See if you don’t envision a little more of your likes and dislikes coming through; so that you become one of the people who shows by how they present themselves each day that they are a lover of life itself.
